Hello again Dave,  my husband gets a least two hours exercise 6 days a week and he perspires for a least half hour after he the exercise session is finished, when bananas were plentiful he would eat one every day and know he had replaced lost electrolytes but who can afford them these days? so are those sports drinks the way to go now? or can you recommend a dietary alternative.  Thanks, Gael.

Hi Gael,

Well I defeinately would not rely on them for all of my hydration needs. For your husband, after his workout he should give his body a chance to cool down and for his heart rate to normalize then start drinking a sports rehydration drink.

These come in to forms: Carbohydrate or Carbohydrate-Protein. By drinking a Carbohydrate drink this will regulate blood sugar levels and return lost electrolytes to the body.

Hydration pre, during and post workout all work hand in hand with training. Hydration does not stop after a workout and should be maintained all day for maximum performance.

Just remember thirst is a poor sign of dehydration.

Hope this helps Gael.
